Deck & Wood Staining on the Maryland & Delaware coast

Painter Tony restores weathered decks, fences, gazebos and woodwork from Ocean City to Rehoboth Beach with deep-penetrating stains that bring the color back and keep moisture out.

Protection for wood that lives outside on the coast

Decks, docks, fences and gazebos near the water soak up moisture, then bake in the sun. Unprotected wood turns gray, checks and eventually rots.

A deep-penetrating, weather-resistant stain soaks into the wood to resist moisture and UV, which is why the gazebo in the slider below went from tired and gray to rich cedar again.

Staining is not only an outdoor job. Mantels, interior trim, wood ceilings, cabinetry and furniture-grade pieces get the same careful attention, with stain and clear coats that bring out the grain.

The walnut cabinet and oak restaurant seating in the gallery show what that looks like when the wood is the star.

Paint or stain? You do not have to guess

Some surfaces look best with the grain showing and some are better painted, like the crisp white deck in the gallery. Tony will look at the wood, how it is exposed and the look you want, and recommend the finish that will last.

FAQ

Deck & Wood Staining questions

How often should a deck be restained near the beach?

It depends on how much sun and water the deck gets and the product used, but coastal decks generally need attention sooner than inland ones. A good sign it is time is when water stops beading on the surface and soaks in, or when the color has faded and the wood is turning gray.

Can you bring back gray, weathered wood?

In most cases, yes. Weathered wood is cleaned and prepped so the stain can penetrate, then coated with a weather-resistant stain. The gazebo on this page is a real example of a faded cedar roof brought back to a rich color.

Do you stain interior woodwork too?

Yes. Mantels, trim, doors, wood ceilings, cabinetry and furniture-grade pieces are all part of the work, including clear finishes on natural wood. The gallery includes a stained walnut cabinet and oak restaurant seating.

Should my deck be painted or stained?

Stain lets the grain show and tends to wear gradually, while a solid paint or coating gives a uniform color like the white deck in the gallery. The right choice depends on the wood, its condition and the look you want. Tony will recommend what will hold up best on your deck.
