Getting to know Salisbury

Salisbury’s Rich History

Salisbury was founded in 1732 at the head of the Wicomico River and grew into the largest city on Maryland’s Eastern Shore. After a fire in 1886 destroyed much of downtown, it was rebuilt in brick, and today it is the county seat of Wicomico County.

Neighborhoods & Landmarks

Salisbury has a neighborhood for every stage of life.

  • The Newtown Historic District, known for its Victorian and early twentieth century homes.
  • Downtown and the Riverwalk along the Wicomico River, with restaurants and the Maryland Folk Festival.
  • The area around Salisbury University, with established tree-lined streets.
  • Fast-growing neighborhoods on the east side toward Route 50 and the bypass.

Community & Lifestyle

You have a college town’s energy, a free zoo in the City Park and the beach less than an hour away. It is the Eastern Shore’s center for health care, shopping and dining.
